WebObjects License Price Drops To $699

Apple has reduced the price of its WebObjects web application server software from over $50,000 to $699. The price includes both WebObjects developer tools and a deployment license allowing unlimited usage on one server.

Later this year, Apple says it intends to ship WebObjects 5 for Java, which will use 100 percent Java technology. WebObjects 5 for Java, says Apple, will enable Internet developers to quickly build complex solutions which can be deployed on virtually any server. WebObjects 5 for Java will support many Internet standards including Enterprise Java Beans (EJB) for interoperability and JDBC for universal database connectivity.

Macromedia's New Visual Authoring Tool For Data-Driven Apps

Macromedia Inc. has announced the release of Dreamweaver UltraDev, which it says is the first authoring software that will allow developers to visually create and edit data-driven Web applications on multiple server platforms.

Dreamweaver UltraDev generates applications that use ColdFusion Markup Language technologies, active server pages (ASP), Sun Microsystems Inc. JavaServer Pages (JSP), and industry standard servers.

Macromedia says that Dreamweaver UltraDev can accelerate delivery of projects ranging from dynamically generated pages and forms, to enterprise class solutions such as e-commerce stores, inventory management systems, and intranet database applications.

Dreamweaver UltraDev allows users to preview Web applications populated with live, editable data within the authoring environment. Application builders can inspect databases, build queries, create application logic, and then view dynamic content using Live Data Preview.

Macromedia Dreamweaver UltraDev will be available in June for both windows and Macintosh platforms at an estimated street price of $599. Registered Dreamweaver 3 customers will be able to purchase Dreamweaver UltraDev for a special price of $299.

Macromedia expects to issue its LikeMinds E-Mail product soon. LikeMinds uses "collaborative filtering" technology to analyze the surfing and buying patterns of large groups of Web users to predict future behavior. Its purpose is to help Web sites target e-mail to specific consumer and demographic groups.

Fusion Authority and CFNewbie To Share Resources

Fusion Authority and CFNewbie, two sites dedicated to providing information to the ColdFusion community, have joined forces. The merger will provide a free exchange of information between the sites, allowing Fusion Authority articles written for ColdFusion developers to be reprinted in CFNewbie and for CFNewbie articles written for new ColdFusion developers to be reprinted in Fusion Authority.

Judith Dinowitz, editor-in-chief of Fusion Authority, says that the partnership is a good thing for the ColdFusion community. "The ColdFusion community can only benefit from sharing content and ideas, and from partnerships such as this one. Fusion Authority and CFNewbie address the same audience, but at different levels of experience. As free ColdFusion resources, it is only logical that we lend each other support," said Ms Dinowitz.

Rey Bango, editor of CFNewbie, agrees. "The ColdFusion community has had great online resources for quite some time," he said, "but there has never been a comprehensive and centralized portal for getting information out to developers of different experience levels. This partnership will provide the balance that ColdFusion enthusiasts have been longing for."

Allaire's JRun 3 Release Candidate 1 for Windows, Linux, Solaris and HPUX is available for download at the Allaire beta site.

Allaire's JRun 3.0/ClusterCATS Release Candidate 1 for various platforms can also be downloaded.
